Winter break thoughts:
- Semi-rested!
- Naturally, I did not do most things I listed on my initial implementation plan, but it’s ok! I expected that
- I did get a lot of time to reflect. While I’m getting more comfortable making work and/or talking about Vietnam (I did not make any Vietnam projects in undergrad), I still experience a feeling of resistance, shame and inadequacy when it comes to this topic. I feel pressured/responsible to be correct, to represent everyone, which is **unnecessary and impossible. I wanted to incorporate pcomp because that’s what I came to ITP for, but then proceeded to feel waves of panic because pcomp is the bane of my existence
(I do enjoy it I just don’t have the patience rn big shout out to everyone for carrying me thru pcomp) So the majority of the winter break has been about adjusting my expectations, accepting that I won’t be able or need to finish everything, and more resting.
- I reached out to Margaret and she gave me an awesome reading list, bless her 🥺
- I looked into some more work that resonates with me and/or closely align with my interests, or simply work that I’m envious of and would love to try out
- Subjective Atlas of Pakistan
- I love how personable and informal this is! It’s not a big declaration of this-is-everything-you-need-to-know-about-Pakistan, but a collective body of work that shows Pakistan from different perspectives that are not necessarily “correct” or “perfect”
- I decided to build an atlas, a compendium, a body of work made up of small experimentations and sketches, rather than making one completed piece
- They will be responses to readings I have read or to explore my personal frustration/discomfort/avoidance of “Vietnam”. Learning new ways to talk about it, or not talk about it? Scrape the wording used to describe the war and map their sentiments?
- I’m also strangely attached to the Vietnam clips that I’m continuing to collect ... maybe I can re-arrange the narrative as a new way to view “Vietnam”?
- Lizzy recommended Christina who did a similar thing for her thesis 🌸
