💡 Assignment: because I need to graduate

I want to make another project that falls under my thesis, which is about the multi-faceted narratives often attached to the word “Vietnam” but also bc I need to graduate. I do struggle to find a way to connect my thesis with Live Web so here are some rough ideas:

1. A collective definition of “Vietnam”

1. A website that collects different meanings, and interpretations of the word “Vietnam”, since I’m fascinated by the varying definitions and impressions people have of “Vietnam”. I was thinking of making a little quiz that collects and inserts all the answers into a collective definition of “Vietnam” at the bottom.
1. Shawn’s feedback is this feels meme-like, and whether there’s a way to flip it (”This dirt smells like America). He also mentioned that the output needs to have more impact, which I agree with! It’s a tricky territory to be in.

2. A collective travelling experience

1. Inspired by a project done by Sue and Katie last year, I thought it would be fun to collectively and digitally travel to fake “Vietnams” through google Maps, using a tool like this.
1. I like the tool but the process of integrating it can be quite difficult, plus ... the idea is not really fleshed out. 😕
3. An interactive map

1. During feedback in class, Yiting suggested that maybe I can make a live/interactive map game where people click around to try and find “Vietnam”, and that seems fun! I have been looking into some map-based interactive work (using mapbox), so it doesn't seems doable woooo
2. Instead of trying to find the “real” Vietnam, I will make an interactive map where everyone can see other people’s cursors as they all try to find the fake “Vietnams” around the world (aka the “Vietnam” that’s mentioned in popular media like Tenet, Forrest Gump, etc.)
1. It will be half live-web, half data viz?
2. It will have a live update of everyone’s cursors
3. Uses mapbox, like this: https://editor.p5js.org/[email protected]/sketches/Oj-VPNUeG, https://pudding.cool/2020/01/diaspora/, https://pudding.cool/2019/05/people-map/, https://moviemaps.org/movies/43d
3. The term “heterotopia” came up during class, which was also a keyword during my thesis research, so it’s probably meant to be! Would be interesting to find the “other” “Vietnams” in people’s conscience.
